One of the best sci-fi films ever is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It’s an 80’s classic

Looking for something to watch this Bank Holiday Monday? Why not check out one of these fine flicks airing on TV tonight.

RoboCop – ITV 4 – 9pm

In a dystopic and crime-ridden Detroit, a terminally wounded cop (Peter Weller) returns to the force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories.

Our pick for this evening, RoboCop works brilliantly as a B-movie sci-fi action flick, a satire about corporate greed and corruption and an oddly emotional drama about a man learning to be human again.

Aided by a great cast, director Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Starship Troopers) balances the jarring tones with skill – making the movie a standout of its genre.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters – RTÉ Two – 9pm

In this third film in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, humans must rely on Godzilla and Mothra to defeat King Ghidorah, who has awakened Rodan and other Titans to destroy the world.

While King of the Monsters’ human drama is pretty weak, it does boast epic monster battles which is pretty much all you want from a Godzilla movie.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – RTÉ One – 9.30pm

Drifter and former army military police officer Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) must uncover the truth behind a major government conspiracy in order to clear his name while on the run as a fugitive from the law.

Also starring How I Met Your Mother star Cobie Smulders, Never Go Back is an average but watchable sequel to the very good original Jack Reacher movie.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy – TG4 – 9.30pm

During the height of the Cold War, disgraced British spy George Smiley (Gary Oldman) is rehired in secret by his government when they fear MI-6 has been compromised by a double agent working for the Soviets.

This dense yet gripping thriller also stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciarán Hinds, Colin Firth, Kathy Burke, Mark Strong, Stephen Graham, Toby Jones and Tom Hardy.

Safe House – Virgin Media One – 10.05pm

A young CIA agent is tasked with looking after a fugitive in a safe house. But when the safe house is attacked, he finds himself on the run with his charge.

Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds frontline this solid action thriller, with supporting turns from our own Brendan Gleeson and Liam Cunningham.

Happy Gilmore – ITV 4 – 11.10pm

A rejected hockey player (Adam Sandler) puts his skills to the golf course to save his grandmother’s house.

Happy Gilmore is probably the Sandman’s best comedy, with two hilarious villainous turns from Christopher McDonald and Ben Stiller.

East is East – Film Four – 11.25pm

In early 1970s England, a Pakistani father (Om Puri) finds the authority he has previously maintained challenged by his increasingly Anglicized children.

This 1999 comedy-drama was a hit with both critics and audiences.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
