Oscar nominations

Joker got the most nominations while Saoirse Ronan has been nominated for a fourth Oscar, an incredible achievement.

After winning at the Golden Globes in their respective categories, it appears that WWI drama 1917 and Once Upon A Time in… Hollywood are the films to beat at the 2020 Oscars.

The nominations have been announced and those two will be competing alongside The Irishman, Marriage Story, Parasite, Joker, Jojo Rabbit, Little Women and Ford vs Ferrari in the category of Best Picture.

Elsewhere, Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman), Bong Joon Ho (Parasite), Sam Mendes (1917), and Todd Phillips (Joker) will all be vying for the Best Director gong.

After winning at the Golden Globes, it’s no surprise to see Joaquin Phoenix nominated for Best Actor and the star of Joker is in esteemed company with Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood) and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) nominated alongside him for Best Actor.

In terms of the Irish interest, Saoirse Ronan has picked up her fourth Oscar nomination for her role in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women. The Irish actress will be competing against Renée Zellweger (Judy), Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story), Charlize Theron (Bombshell), and Cynthia Erivio (Harriet) for the Best Actress accolade.

Gangster epic The Irishman dominates the Best Supporting Actor category with Al Pacino and Joe Pesci (The Irishman), joined by Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood), Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood), and Anthony Hopkins (The Two Popes) as nominees.

For Best Supporting Actress, Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell), Margot Robbie (Bombshell), Laura Dern (Marriage Story), Scarlett Johnasson (Jojo Rabbit) and Florence Pugh (Little Women) all received nominations.

The event will be held on 9 February.
