10 huge new releases coming to Amazon Prime Video in 2022

Rory Cashin

Including the most expensive TV show ever made…

Amazon Prime Video has been absolutely spoiling us lately with some great movies being constantly added to its library, such as these, as well as these, and also these.

But on top of adding some classics for us to enjoy, it has also given us a preview of the new movies and shows we can expect to see through 2022.

While this list is by no means comprehensive, it is definitely enough to get us very, very excited about the next 12 months of Prime Video viewing…

The Tender Bar – 7 January 2022

Directed by George Clooney, with a screenplay by the writer of The Departed, and starring Ben Affleck, Tye Sheridan, Christopher Lloyd and Lily Rabe, this coming-of-age drama is already getting awards attention, with Affleck recently receiving a Best Supporting Actor nomination for the upcoming Golden Globes Awards.

Hotel Transylvania: Transformania – 14 January 2022

The first three Hotel Transylvania movies have made a combined $1.3 billion at the global box office, so to say that they’re pretty popular is a bit of an understatement. The fourth movie in the franchise is arriving exclusively on Prime Video, with Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Katherine Hahn, Steve Buscemi and more return to voice their monstrous characters.

A Hero – 21 January 2022

96% on Rotten Tomatoes, winner of one of the major prizes at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and a major frontrunner for the Best International Feature Film at the upcoming Oscars, this tense Iranian drama tells the story of a man on a two-day leave from a long prison sentence and the complications that arise while he’s out from behind bars.

Reacher – 4 February 2022

Tom Cruise is out, and one-time TV Aquaman Alan Ritchson is in for this series adaptation of the hit Lee Child books. Taking things right back to the beginning, the first season will adapt Killing Floor, Child’s first book and the first proper appearance of former Army investigator Jack Reacher.

I Want You Back – Early 2022

Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny), Jenny Slate (Parks & Rec), Gina Rodriguez (Jane The Virgin) and Scott Eastwood (The Longest Ride) star in this rom-com about two recently broken-up couples who go to extreme lengths to ensure their next relationships also end badly.

Rooney – Early 2022

A look at the man who is widely considered to be one of the very best footballers of his generation, this documentary will see Wayne Rooney and those closest to him (including his wife Coleen) recount stories from some of the important moments of his life.

Arsène Wenger: Invincible – Early 2022

Even more good news for football fans, with another documentary giving us a behind-the-scenes look at one of the biggest names in modern sport.

The Lord of the Rings – 2 Sept 2022

Definitively the most expensive TV show ever made, and set thousands of years before the events of the much-loved movie trilogy, this is inarguably one of the most anticipated shows of 2022. Will it manage to replace that Game of Thrones-shaped hole in our collective hearts? We’ll have to wait and see…

Star Trek Picard Season 2 – TBD 2022

Picking up following the nearly-universe-destroying events of the first season, Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his new crew return to face some infamous old foes, including Q (John de Lancie) and the Borg Queen (Annie Wersching).

The Boys Season 3 – TBD 2022

Homelander’s unblinking, barely repressed evil will once again be front-and-centre when The Boys returns, as the undercover good guys attempt to save the world, who are unwittingly supporting a group of emotional superheroes with God complexes.
