Sleep, a gripping 2023 mystery horror thriller, is airing on TV tonight (Saturday, 23 May).
Hailing from South Korea, the movie follows a newlywed couple and expectant parents (played by Jung Yu-mi and Lee Sun-kyun) whose domestic bliss is shattered when the husband begins sleepwalking.
Though he has no recollection of his nighttime activities the morning after, the husband's sleepwalking episodes turn increasingly destructive and violent, causing his wife to fear that he may harm himself and/or their baby.
Sleep was the feature debut of writer-director Jason Yu, a frequent collaborator of Oscar-winner Bong Joon Ho.
We'd argue that Yu's 2023 film is well worth seeking out for its intriguing premise, its blend of suspense and dark humour, and its clever ambiguity regarding the underlying reason for the husband's sleepwalking.
On the latter point, could the sleepwalking be a manifestation of the anxiety and pressures the character feels about starting a family? Or could there be a more fantastical explanation?
Holding an 95% Rotten Tomatoes score, Sleep is airing on Film4 tonight at 11.40pm.
The movie will also be available to stream for free on Channel 4's website from Sunday, 24 May.
