Movies on TV Saturday 11 September

Hey kids, it’s Saturday night!

It’s a busy day out there.

Is there time for movies? Yes. Always. Forever.

Here’s the most eye-catching options on your television screen on Saturday, 11 September…

The Karate Kid – Film4 – 6.05pm

The remake, featuring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith.

All The President’s Men – TCM – 6.20pm

If the All-Ireland buzz proves too much, you could do worse than switching on Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman’s classic portrayal of industry-toppling journalism.

The Pacifier – RTÉ One – 6.35pm

Vin Diesel riffs on Kindergarten Cop. Dominic Torettto, this is not.

The Mummy – RTÉ 2 – 7.30pm

It’s the Tom Cruise one, which is not as fun as the Brendan Fraser one.

The Abyss – Film4 – 9pm

James Cameron’s vintage sci-fi/horror sees a mission to the depths in order to save a nuclear submarine go very, very wrong and existential indeed.

Unforgiven – TCM – 9pm

Clint Eastwood’s grim western is always on TV but it’s excellent so we see no choice but to keep mentioning that it’s always on TV.

The Untouchables – ITV4 – 9pm

He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That’s the Chicago way. And that’s how you get Capone.

Jurassic World – Sky Showcase – 9pm

Why is this always on?

Take This Waltz – TG4 – 9.40pm

Michelle Williams is tempted by the possibility of a wild affair in this well-received comedy-drama.

Murder on the Orient Express – RTÉ One – 9.40pm

In our pick for the evening, Kenneth Branagh directs an all-star cast (he also plays the lead) as an eccentric detective (Branagh) attempts to solve a train-based execution. Red herrings and arch comedy abound.

Just how all-star is that cast? You’ve got Branagh, Willem Dafoe, Penélope Cruz, Daisy Ridley, Leslie Odom Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer, Judi Dench, Josh Gad, Olivia Colman, Lucy Boynton and also Johnny Depp, if it’s still okay to mention his name.

Gladiator – ITV – 10.35pm

Not everyone has access to ITV but if you do, Russell Crowe’s swords-and-sandals epic is on.

Mortal Engines – Channel 4 – 11.05pm

Hugo Weaving and our own Robert Sheehan mill about in this sci-fi dystopia.

The China Syndrome – RTÉ One – 11.45pm

Michael Douglas takes centre stage against the backdrop of conspiratorial nuclear fallout.

Commando – Film4 – 11.50pm

Let off some steam.
