Our TV movie pick for tonight (Wednesday, 26 November) is The Alamo, the star-studded 2004 Western war drama.
From director John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side, The Founder), the film is set in the 1830s and tells the story of the real-life Battle of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution.
The plot synopsis reads: "Gen. Sam Houston (Dennis Quaid, The Day After Tomorrow) organises a rebel army to liberate Texas from the brutal rule of Mexican dictator General Santa Anna (Emilio Echevarría, Amores perros).
"Though vastly outnumbered, Gen. Houston's volunteer army includes such folkloric figures as Jim Bowie (Jason Patric, The Lost Boys) and Davy Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton, Landman).
"As Santa Anna's forces advance on San Antonio, the legendary general and his men prepare for a final heroic standoff at a battle-worn mission called the Alamo."
Also featuring in its cast Emily Deschanel (Bones), Jordi Mollà (Blow), Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring) and W. Earl Brown (Deadwood), The Alamo was a commercial and critical flop, with some reviewers dubbing it "slow" and "talky".
That said, it had its admirers, including legendary critic Roger Ebert, who raved about the movie:
"Here is a movie that captures the loneliness and dread of men waiting for two weeks for what they expect to be certain death, and it somehow succeeds in taking those pop-culture brand names like Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie and giving them human form."
