To celebrate National Egg Day here are a dozen of our favourite movie egg references

Egg-splosive, egg-citing and egg-cellent. Just eggs really...

Egg-splosive, egg-citing and egg-cellent. Just eggs really…

It’s National Egg Day and to celebrate we have decided to shell out and get some of the JOE writers’ favourite egg references from film and TV over the years. We scrambled our brains together for your pleasure and we’re hoping that these 12 moments will leave you feeling all sunny side up.

Feel free to add, share or poach our best yolks…

Cool Hand Luke – Eating 50 boiled eggs

Only the coolest man in the history of the world can do something like this. Reports that Marty Morrissey can in fact eat 51 of them are yet to be confirmed.

Fr Ted – Dougal turning into a giant egg

You can fupp off if you think that Fr Ted was going to enjoy a picnic where all he could eat was egg sandwiches, that’s enough to crack any man up in our opinion.

Unfortunately Dougal wasn’t in attendance at the picnic, he was too busy debating the eternal Oasis v Blur issue with Fr Damo, so Fr Jack tagged along and managed to neck two bottles of wine in the space of about two seconds.

Hot Shots – The belly scene

Is it just us that’s hungry for a fried egg and a couple of rashers all of a sudden?

Aliens – The first alien hatches

Forget Prometheus and the mad barrels of extra-terrestrial goo in that film because the original Alien eggs illustrate what sci-fi ‘crap your pants horror’ is all about.

We still vividly remember the exact moment when the first face-hugger jumped out of the egg and burned its way through John Hurt’s mask. We’re fairly certain that he survived the attack and didn’t suffer a grizzly death that involved an alien bursting out of his chest cavity though. Oh wait…

This scene put us off eating Kinder eggs for at least five minutes.

Rocky – Eating Raw Eggs

Obviously this diet worked because Rocky managed to go the distance against the formidable Carl Weathers Apollo Creed and we hear that Stallone still adheres to this strict egg-based regiment.

It’s why he looks in such great shape ahead of Rocky 37: The Showdown with Clubber Lang in Space and also John Rambo: Invasion of the Aran Islands.

Randy Marsh – Randy’s pre-fight diet

We’ve based our entire life around the teachings of the God-like Randy Marsh and this really is the only way to prepare for any sporting contest.

Ghostbusters – Egg-frying obviously means a demon’s about

We imagine that Sigourney Weaver must break down crying hysterically whilst curling up in the foetal position at the sheer sight of an egg.

Not only did Ripley get really egg-cited in the Alien films with all those those loveable critters but her character Dana in Ghostbusters also manages to have a magic counter that boils eggs… it might have something to do with the fact that her building was a conduit for an unspeakable demon though.

It’s probably the counter.

Airplane – Let me see your tongue

We love Leslie Nielsen’s reaction when the bird flies out.

Jurassic Park – The Raptor’s hatching

The amazing miracle of life unfolding right before our eyes is one of the most memorable scenes in Spielberg’s masterpiece.

Wait, wait, wait. Let’s cut the sentimental crap right here because these are the same buggers that tore Muldoon to pieces.

Clever girls indeed.

Batman – That line from the Joker

Mick Jagger once famously said ‘You Can’t Always Get what You Want’ but the Rolling Stone’s real-life girlfriend Geri Hall had more iconic words said about her by her on-screen boyfriend in Tim Burton’s Batman.

We’re thinking of getting this quote inscribed on our headstones.

Willy Wonka – The educated eggdicater

It’s almost like this scene is trying to teach us something about rich, greedy and self-involved people being bad eggs or something.

Parks and Recreation – Ron Swanson ordering food.

Go to a restaurant, ask for this from the menu and see what happens. In a word…manly.

That’s all yolks.
