#TRAILERCHEST: Colm Meaney is hilarious in culture clash comedy Halal Daddy

Rory Cashin

“Do you think I should learn Arabic? I already bought the tapes and everything!”

Welcome to #TrailerChest, where we’re taking a sneak peek at the brand new trailer for Halal Daddy.

Plot’s it all about?

Shot in Sligo and full to the brim with Irish talent, Halal Daddy looks like the next great feel-good comedy to come from these shores.

This time round, we’re thrust into the life of young Muslim Raghdan Aziz (Patel) who leaves London for the West Of Ireland, and falls in love with Meave (Bolger), the daughter of Martin (Meaney).

When Raghda’s father (Malik) tracks him down, he tells his son he’s bought him a close-to-run-down abattoir to turn into a Halal outlet, something that Martin wants to get as involved with as possible.

Dealing with potentially tricky subjects with a light touch and deadpan comedy is something Irish film has been nailing lately – look at bullying in Sing Street or homophobia in Handsome Devil – and Halal Daddy looks set to follow that up with a great look at modern Ireland’s view on different cultures.

Plus Meaney is absolutely killing it here. We can’t wait.

Starring: Nikesh Patel, Colm Meaney, Art Malik, Deidre O’Kane, Sarah Bolger,

Directed by: Conor McDermottroe

Irish release date: 30 June 2017

Enjoy!
