And there was a lot of sympathy for the men and women in uniform.
The second in a two-part series on the Gardai in Ireland aired on RTÉ 2 on Tuesday night and as was the case in the first episode, it showed a side of the force that the public don’t see very often.
The second episode followed officers on the ground in Dublin as they undertook a range of different types of policing in the capital, but probably the most shocking aspect (or not so shocking if you’ve ever encountered it) is the abuse that they had to put up with.
The theft of mobile phones in Dublin and Irish people’s troublesome relationship with alcohol were amongst the issues explored in Tuesday night’s programme, while there was an insight into how they dealt with a recent outbreak of violence between Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers supporters.
The general sentiment expressed by viewers was sympathy with the Gardai for what they encounter on a daily basis.
