Here are the 8 best movies on the telly today

Rory Cashin

Three World Cup matches and hours of Love Island not doing it for you? Then we’ve got some alternatives for you.

Yep, today sees Colombia V Japan, Poland V Senegal, and Russia V Egypt (if you want details on when/how to watch them, then click here), as well as another night of those horrifically attractive people fighting for each other’s attention (although by all accounts, things look WAY more interesting on Love Island Australia).

If none of that interests you, then we’ve got some movies for you to enjoy from the comfort of your couch…

TUESDAY 19 JUNE

Men In Black – Film 4 – 7.10pm

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones make a perfect pairing in this sci-fi action-comedy, but Vincent D’Onofrio really doesn’t get enough credit for his incredibly creepy performance as the extraterrestrial villain.

No Escape – Film 4 – 9:00pm

Owen Wilson and Lake Bell play a happily married couple enjoying their new home in an unnamed foreign country, but when they find the local government has been violently overthrown and all foreigners are suddenly being executed on the streets, they need to find shelter. Pierce Brosnan also stars, playing an shady agent who tries to get them safely out of the country.

The Other Guys – Comedy Central – 9.00pm

That intro with The Rock and Sam Jackson is still one of the best scenes in comedy history.

Jumper – SyFy – 9.00pm

Hayden “I Ruined Star Wars” Christensen plays a man who the special ability to be able to teleport anywhere he likes. Thinking he is the only one with the ability, he soon discovers that there are plenty others like him (including one played by bad boy Jamie Bell), and that they are actually hunted by the government, headed by a white-haired Sam Jackson.

Windtalkers – ITV4 – 9.05pm

Nic Cage reteams with the director of Face/Off for this epic WWII movie about two soldiers assigned to protect Navajo marines, who then use their native language to create an unbreakable secret code within their group.

Unstoppable – SyFy – 11.00pm

Chris Pine and Denzel Washington are two train conductors forced into action when one of the locomotives takes off with no driver, no breaks and filled with dangerously explosive materials. Incredibly, this is actually based on a true story.

Haywire – Film 4 – 11.05pm

Gina Carano is the real-life MMA expert who is put to work in this action-thriller by the director of Ocean’s 11, as she plays an assassin caught up in an international plot. Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum and loads more co-star. Also features a pretty great action sequence filmed on the streets of Dublin!

Inside Man – ITV4 – 11.50pm

Denzel Washington is the police officer trying to negotiate a hostage situation inside a bank. Clive Owen is the head bank robber inside, but is he really there just to rob the money, or is there more going on? A fantastic twist-filled thriller, co-starring Chiwetel Ejifor, Jodie Foster, Christopher Plummer and Willem Dafoe.
