Best Movies TV Sunday

Sunday night is alright for movies…

Seriously, this is a quality line-up if you’re glued to the couch today and looking for things to immediately plug that World Cup void after the final.

We’ve got knockabout comedies, classic science-fiction adventures, maybe the best entry into the Mission: Impossible series, a stunning modern-day western and tense spy drama.

Sounds like the perfect recipe for a chilled-out Sunday to us.

Here are the best movies on the box today…

Back to the Future Trilogy – Film 4 – 2pm – 9pm

Yep, all three films in the Back to the Future franchise back to back. Admittedly, by the time the story makes it to the wild west, the well has run dry a bit.

Still, the first two are bona fire cinematic greats and the chemistry between Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd remains electric all these years on.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – RTÉ 2 – 7.05pm

Right after the World Cup finishes for the summer. Nice timing, national broadcaster.

The upcoming sixth entry into the wildly inventive and ludicrously fun Mission: Impossible series is getting rave reviews, so why not give Brad Bird’s effort a spin?

Ghost Pro (as the kids call it) features knowing laughs, enjoyable teamwork, the debut of Jeremy Renner and that amazing Burj Khalifa stunt sequence. It’s great.

The Mummy Returns – ITV2 – 7.35pm

Harken back to a time when Brendan Fraser was a box office draw.

There’s Something About Mary – Comedy Central – 9pm

Having just turned 20 years old – check out Rory Cashin’s retrospective here – there’s no time like the present to revisit classic gross-out comedy There’s Something About Mary.

Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller and Matt Dillon head up the iconic Farrelly Brothers outing that’s probably best not watched with the entire family.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy – ITV 4 – 9pm

A film practically designed for a Sunday evening; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is a seriously patient affair – in that it’s really, really slow – but still a very rewarding experience.

This story of Cold War espionage boasts one hell of a cast as Gary Oldman, John Hurt, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Toby Jones and Ciarán Hinds try to find out just who is betraying them all.

Hell or High Water – Channel 4 – 10.15pm

Sicario 2: Soldado is in cinemas now – and if we’re being honest, it’s a little disappointing – so let’s revisit a recent gem from writer Taylor Sheridan.

The man behind the scripts for Sicario and Wind River struck pure gold with Hell or High Water; the tale of two financially-hit brothers who are very, very good at bank robbing in Texas.

Their skills attract the attention of Jeff Bridges, who will stop at nothing to hunt the pair – expertly drawn by Chris Pine and Ben Foster – down. Trust us, this one is unmissable.

The Place Beyond The Pines – Film 4 – 12.50am

A sprawling and heavy drama that may well be too ambitious for its own good but is nonetheless deeply compelling, The Place Beyond The Pines presents a set of overlapping stories lined with characters torn apart and twisted in various different ways thanks to an inciting incident.

A bleach-blonde motorbike-riding Ryan Gosling is the poster boy here, but there’s strong work from Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Mahershala Ali and a scene-stealing Ben Mendehlson to savour, too.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
