Bohemian Rhapsody and Rami Malek win big at the Golden Globes

Paul Moore

Bohemian Rhapsody

Great wins for Netflix and the Irish-made The Favourite too.

Don’t stop me now is probably the motto for the entire team behind Bohemian Rhapsody because the Freddie Mercury biopic is after picking up some serious momentum following an excellent night at the Golden Globes, winning best motion picture (drama) and best actor in a drama, respectively.

Netflix also registered some impressive accolades with Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma and Chuck Lorre’s The Kominsky Method also taking home some of the night’s biggest awards, including Best Director (Cuaron).

However, Green Book was the big winner of the night, with three awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture (Mahershala Ali), and Best Screenplay.

After being nominated for an impressive five gongs, Irish-made drama The Favourite managed to secure a win for Olivia Colman in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category.

Christian Bale’s immersive performance as Dick Cheney in Vice, meanwhile, saw him win Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

It’s arguable that the biggest shock of the night came in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama category, however, with Glenn Close’s performance in The Wife edging out Lady Gaga, Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy and Rosamund Pike.

Lady Gaga did win Best Original Song for her beloved track, ‘Shallow’.

As for the TV side of things, Netflix’s The Kominsky Method won the Best Comedy prize and Best Actor in a TV Comedy for Michael Douglas. The series tied with The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story for most wins, with two.

Sharp Objects, The Americans, Bodyguard, and new drama, Escape at Dannemora, also picked up some accolades.
