The dream team has finally come together.
Throughout the course of his remarkable career, Martin Scorsese has frequently collaborated with the same people – his work with the editor Thelma Schoonmaker is absolutely legendary – but when it comes to on-screen talent, there are two names synonymous with the wonderful director; Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.
Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Goodfellas, The King of Comedy, Casino – all perfect examples of De Niro at the peak of his powers.
The Departed, Shutter Island, The Aviator, The Wolf of Wall Street, Gangs of New York – all perfect examples of DiCaprio at the peak of his powers!
Of course, film fans will already know that both actors previously starred together in This Boy’s Life and the underrated Marvin’s Room – directed by Michael Caton-Jones and Jerry Zaks respectively – but in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, DeNiro stated that the three men are finally working on a new project together.
The report claims that De Niro said he and Scorsese are also teaming up again for an upcoming film with Leonardo DiCaprio. He said the deal is done — “It’s happening” — but he didn’t divulge further details about the project.
With regards to the immediate futures of the three men, Scorsese and De Niro are currently in the post-production process on their new gangster epic, The Irishman.
When JOE caught up with Charles Brandt, the author of the novel which the film is based on, he confirmed that Netflix plan on releasing The Irishman in the fall of 2019. In fact, during the same report in The Hollywood Reporter, De Niro confirmed that The Irishman will also be getting a cinematic release.
In terms of DiCaprio’s next plans, the Oscar-winning star of The Revenant has Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood set for release and he also announced another collaboration with Scorsese; the pair are set to work together on the historical murder mystery, Killers of the Flower Moon.
The thought of DiCaprio, De Niro, and Scorsese all finally working together on a new film is the perfect Christmas present.
