The TV presenter criticised the WWE for the way in which they treat their performers.

The WWE have hit back at John Oliver following his deep dive into the treatment of wrestlers on the most recent episode of Last Week Tonight.

In a lengthy segment, Oliver claimed that the WWE treated their wrestlers poorly, and claimed some of the wrestlers are treated like “circus animals” by boss Vince McMahon.

In a statement issued to Deadline, the WWE have responded to the criticism, and offered Oliver the chance to attend WrestleMania this Sunday in an attempt to change his mind.

“John Oliver is clearly a clever and humorous entertainer, however the subject matter covered in his WWE segment is no laughing matter. Prior to airing, WWE responded to his producers refuting every point in his one-sided presentation.

“John Oliver simply ignored the facts. The health and wellness of our performers is the single most important aspect of our business, and we have a comprehensive, longstanding Talent Wellness program. We invite John Oliver to attend WrestleMania this Sunday to learn more about our company.”

In the segment on Last Week Tonight, Oliver spoke bluntly about the wrestling company, saying at one point: “While the character Vince is an asshole, it’s important to know that the real Vince is also an asshole.”

Former WWE wrestler CM Punk has sided with Oliver following the saga:
