Netflix fans ‘can’t sleep’ after watching gritty new crime series as it’s ‘just too good’

JOE

The six-part series is streaming across the world right now.

Netflix has just released Griselda, a new crime drama series from the creators of Narcos and Narcos: Mexico. And sticking with their focus on the drug trade, the show is described by Netflix as a “fictionalised dramatisation” inspired by the life of Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco (Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara).

The drug lord is described as having “created one of the most powerful cartels in history”. “Set in 1970s-80s Miami, Blanco’s lethal blend of unsuspected savagery and charm helps her expertly navigate between business and family, leading her to become widely known as ‘the Godmother’,” the plot synopsis from Netflix reads.

One of JOE’s most anticipated shows for 2024, Griselda was made by Narcos’ co-creators Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro – alongside that show’s producer and writer Eric Newman and Ingrid Escajeda – and all six of its episodes were directed by Narcos’ Andrés Baiz.

The new series is earning very positive reviews and currently holds an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score. In particular, Vergara’s against-type central performance and the show’s stylish direction have been singled out for praise.

Viewers have been hooked by the series as well, with some saying they’ve been avoiding sleep so they can binge it.

Taking to X, one fan wrote: “I refuse to go to sleep because Griselda has me soooo hooked.”

Another said: “Supposed to be asleep by Griselda is fire.”

“I’m so sleepy but Sofia Vergara is killing this role Griselda, a third commented. “This is genuinely one of the best TV shows I’ve ever seen. Sofia Vergara completely transformed herself.”

Someone else described the show as the “best six hours of TV I’ve watched in a LONG time,” with another adding: “It’s just too good.”

All episodes of Griselda are available to watch now on Netflix in the UK and Ireland.
