Saoirse Ronan, Daniel Day-Lewis and more among Irish Golden Globes nominees

Michael Lanigan

The nominees for the 75th Golden Globe Awards are out and there are four Irish names in the running.

In Bruges director Martin McDonagh’s third film ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ has earned a total of six nominations, including Best Picture (Drama), Best Screenplay and Best Director.

Fresh from that Saturday Night Live-Aer Lingus sketch is Saoirse Ronan who is up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) after her role in the Rotten Tomatoes-record-breaking comedy-drama Lady Bird.

Almost a shoe-in is Daniel Day-Lewis, who receives his fifth Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama) category for his role in There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film Phantom Thread. Playing Reynolds Woodcock, a renowned dressmaker in 1950’s London, Day-Lewis’ involvement has previously garnered headlines after he declared that it would be his final film before retirement.

Caitriona Balfe has also picked up a nomination in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series category for her part in Outlander.

The two time Academy Award-nominated Kilkenny production company Cartoon Saloon have also been included on the ‘Best Animated Film’ list for their Angelina Jolie-produced feature-length, The Breadwinner, which was directed by Nora Twomey. The story of a girl growing up in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, this is the acclaimed company’s first Golden Globes nomination.

Outside Irish nominations, one of the main surprises in among the nominations is Christopher Plummer for the part he plays in Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World. The film, which tells the story of oil tycoon John Paul Getty’s life originally starred disgraced actor Kevin Spacey. However, after a number of allegations came to light surrounding Spacey’s misconduct in October, director Scott confirmed that the actor’s contribution would be removed, with Plummer being brought in to re-shoot every Spacey scene ahead of its premiere on Christmas Day.

The awards will take place on 7 January 2018.
