It will follow in the footsteps of other adult-aimed Marvel movies like Blade, Deadpool and Logan.
CinemaCon is taking place in Las Vegas right now, a festival of previews where the biggest movie companies in the world show off footage from their biggest upcoming movies. Sony Pictures were up first on Monday night, revealing scenes and teaser trailers for their new Ghostbusters movie, as well as Ridley Scott’s Napoleon biopic, animation sequel Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, video game adaptation Gran Turismo, and loads more.
But the movie that got the most attention was Kraven The Hunter, their latest entry into the Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, joining Venom (Tom Hardy), Morbius (Jared Leto), and of course, Spider-Man (Tom Holland). In the comic books, Kraven (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is the greatest hunter in the world, and he decides the ultimate way to prove this is to hunt down and kill Spider-Man.
At the beginning of the footage, Taylor-Johnson confirmed that the movie will be Sony’s first R-Rated Marvel project, which in the States means that anyone under the age of 17 needs to be accompanied by an adult to watch the film. In Ireland and the UK, the closest comparison would be either a 15A or 16 cert.
According to IGN, the “footage has tons of gruesome kills in it as Kraven takes out poachers and mercs, think Logan, Rambo or John Wick-levels of bloody violence.” The footage also revealed famous comic book characters, including Kraven’s father Sergei Kravinoff (here played by Russell Crowe) and iconic Spider-Man villain Rhino (played by Alessandro Nivola).
Directed by J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year, Triple Frontier), it is yet to seen how – or if – this movie will fully connect to the rest of the Sony Spider-Man Universe, but there are already many more entries in the SSU on the way, including El Muerto (due to arrive in January 2024), Madame Web (February 2024), a third Venom movie (no release date as of yet), and a fourth Spider-Man movie (ditto).
Kraven The Hunter will arrive in Irish cinemas on Friday 6 October this year.
