The gang behind It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia are looking to break a very impressive record

No, it isn’t to see how many cans of beer they can drink in a single flight.

While we all wait with held breath for the return of what is undoubtedly the darkest comedy ever to grace a television set, fans of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia have been gifted with a double-whammy of potentially very good news, thanks to star and co-writer Charlie Day.

On the press tour for his latest movie Hotel Artemis, Day spoke to The Wrap about the future of the show:

“You definitely get Season 13, which we’re making right now, and Season 14, which we’re contracted to do, and then beyond that, it’ll be up to FX, but I think 15 is the record for a comedy, so I imagine we’ll all want to hold the record for the longest-running comedy in America. Fifteen would be the record for the longest live-action comedy, so we’ll probably try and break that record if we can.”

At 14 seasons, It’s Always Sunny will tie with The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet (don’t worry if you’ve never heard of it, it ran from 1952 to 1966) for the most seasons of a live-action comedy on TV, so one more season would push it over the edge into record-breaking territory.

Day was also asked about the potential return of Dennis to the show, to which he gave fans some hope:

“I can say that the fans should feel hopeful. The fans should feel hopeful that they’ll see some more Dennis. There’s been discussions.”

Between this and the incredibly dark animated show that they’re also working on, Always Sunny fans must be as happy as Frank with a rum ham right about now…
